India-China Standoff: No Headway In Resolution For Pangong Lake, Talks Focus Only On Galwan
Sources said the focus of the dialogue at the Major General level is to find a final resolution to the situation at PP14, PP15 and PP 17, three trouble spots in the Galwan area
There have been several rounds of talks between the Indian and Chinese army commanders but tensions at Pangong Lake do not feature in the discussions as China is keen to first resolve the situation in the Galwan area of Eastern Ladakh.
The escalation in Eastern Ladakh was triggered on May 5 as troops clashed on the north bank of the Pangong Lake leaving several injured.
As the far as the Pangong Lake is concerned, discussions will be held at the Corps Commander level later like the one held on June 6, sources have said.
On Friday, another round of top-level military talks took place on Friday with the focus on de-escalation in the Galwan region of Eastern Ladakh even as the troop build-up continues on both sides, days after a slight retreat by both armies at the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
It is here where the Chinese have been camping at a spot that was always in Indian control.
The Chinese have attempted to change status quo by now occupying the Finger 4 area in the lake.
The mountain spurs that protrude into the lake are referred to as fingers in military parlance. The lake is divided into 8 fingers.
India claims territory till Finger 8 but the Chinese are now sitting at Finger 4 not allowing Indian patrols to move forward.
Sources said the focus of the dialogue at the Major General level is to find a final resolution to the situation at PP14, PP15 and PP 17, three trouble spots in the Galwan area.
While a slight retreat by both armies has taken place in Galwan area as a confidence building measure, the troop build up close to the LAC continues. The artillery and tanks moved to forward areas continue to be there.
“The talks are looking at a final resolution. Till the dialogue continues there will be no major changes on the ground,” a source said.
This is the fifth round of talks between Major General from both sides since the standoff started on May 5 in Ladakh after troops from both sides clashed leaving many injured.
An unprecedented meeting at the Corps Commander level took place on June 6 when a Lieutenant General from the Indian Army led a delegation. Lt. Harinder Singh, 14 Corps Commander held talks with his counterpart Maj Gen Liu Lin, Commander South Xinjiang military region.
Once things are settled in other trouble areas, talks at the Corps Commander level are likely to resume for a final resolution to the Pangong Lake situation.
Earlier on Friday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held another review meet with the Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and the three service chiefs.
This was the second meeting this week chaired by the defence minister. Last such meeting was held on June 8.
Sources said latest assessments on the ground situation are being done after military talks at the top commanders level have taken in place in the last week.
