Anti-China Sentiments After Ladakh Clash Soar Demand For Other Foreign Brands
The impact of negative sentiments against China is clearly visible in the Indian markets as people have started boycotting Chinese goods primarily due to two reasons -- Coronavirus and Ladakh clash.
People are now hesitating to buy Chinese goods after the Ladakh clash
The Coronavirus pandemic and now the growing tension between India and China in Ladakh has created a negative environment against China and Chinese products. People are now hesitating to buy Chinese goods primarily due to two reasons -- Coronavirus and the patriotic feelings after 20 Indian soldiers were martyred in the Galwan Valley.
Besides the symbolic protests organised by some organisations against Chinese goods, the impact is also clearly seen in the minds of the common Indian citizens and the traders.
Not only the common Indian citizens but the traders, too, have started boycotting the Chinese goods. We witnessed a number of bills and posters which were stuck on the walls of many shops in various Chandigarh markets, calling people to boycott Chinese goods.
One of the shop owners explained to us why every Indian should boycott Chinese goods.
"Buying out a Chinese product will only strengthen the economy of an untrustworthy neighbour who is eyeing our land. Every Indian should boycott Chinese products to boost our own economy," Harish Ahuja said.
Negative Sentiments Against China, Chinese Goods
India Today TV came across a couple of customers who have decided not to buy Chinese products primarily due to two reasons -- Coronavirus and Ladakh clash.
"Coronavirus came from China and now the way our 20 brave soldiers were martyred is enough to boycott Chinese goods. Every Indian is angry at China," a customer said.
Another customer said it was better to buy a Made in India product than to buy a product of Chinese origin. "I never trusted Chinese products but now I have decided to buy American brand products," he said.
Suspension of Chinese Imports To Impact Indian Market
The impact of negative sentiments against Chinese goods is also clearly visible in the Indian markets.
President Sector 22 Vyapar Mandal said after the Coronavirus pandemic, the sale of Chinese goods including mobile phones, mobile phone accessories, and electronic items, has dropped by at least 15 per cent. Prices of mobile phone accessories imported from China have gone up as there is a shortage.
"Importers are hesitating to import Chinese goods. They know there is a negative sentiment about Chinese goods and second, they are fearing losses as people have refused to buy Chinese brands. The importers have decided not to import Chinese goods for time being," Subhash Narang said.
Demand For Apple, Samsung And Motorola Brands Soar
Negative sentiments against Chinese goods have attracted the customers towards other foreign brands like Samsung, Apple, and Motorola. The demand for these brands has gone up.
Chandigarh-based mobile phone trader Abhimanyu told India Today TV that the stock of Chinese mobile phones and accessories are drying up fast as the imports from China are withheld. People are hesitating to buy Chinese goods.
"This will impact many people who run mobile phone repair shops. The prices of mobile phones will go up and many will be forced to leave the business," he said.
