New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday slammed Congress MP Rahul Gandhi for congratulating three Jammu and Kashmir-based photojournalists who won the coveted Pulitzer Prize.


Taking to Twitter, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said that Rahul has congratulated the journalists even when their Pulitzer citation called Kashmir 'contested territory' and asked if he considers the region as an integral part of India?

"Dear @RahulGandhi ji You congratulated Mr Dar who received the Pulitzer award today for photography. One of the photographs is enclosed herewith The caption mentions “Indian Occupied Kashmir” Mr Rahul is Kashmir an integral part of India?? Answer (sic)," Patra tweeted.

Dar Yasin, Mukhtar Khan and Channi Anand working with news agency Associated Press (AP) won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of Kashmir’s lockdown after the abrogation of Article 370 last year. Congratulating the photojournalists, Rahul had said the trio made India proud.

"Congratulations to Indian photojournalists Dar Yasin, Mukhtar Khan and Channi Anand for winning a Pulitzer Prize for their powerful images of life in Jammu & Kashmir. You make us all proud," the Congress leader had tweeted. 

'Striking Images of Life'

The three photojournalists - Dar Yasin, Mukhtar Khan, and Channi Anand - have been awarded the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for their "striking images of life" in the valley.

Taking to Twitter, Yasin said, "Thank you colleagues, friends, brothers. I would just like to say thank you for standing by us always. It is an honour and a privilege beyond any we could have ever imagined. It is overwhelming to receive this honour."

Anand, who like Yasin and Khan work for the Associated Press, said that the award left him speechless. "I was shocked and could not believe it," he said, calling the prize-winning photos a continuation of the work he has been doing for 20 years.
