Average Kashmiri Sees India As Occupational Force: Iltija Mufti
Launching a fierce attack on Narendra Modi government for diluting Article 370, Iltija Mufti, daughter of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti, said that the preventive arrest of her mother was uncalled for and the BJP government was wrongly putting the blame on her family.
"They say those who ruled Kashmir is responsible for the current situation in the state. My grandfather was CM for four years and my mother for less than three years. How can they be the ruling class?" she said.
"Such blame game helps them justify what they are doing. They call it preventive detention. How many people have been arrested for lynching across the country? Haryana is the rape capital of India. Will they arrest all the men of Haryana because they could be potential rapists? "
She also dismissed BJP's argument that the dilution of Kashmir and current lock down has been done for the welfare of the Kashmiris. "Kashmiris have been caged for last two months. Nobody talks about the constitutional harakiri committed by the government. If it has been done for the welfare of the Kashmiris, why were they not consulted?" she said.
On being asked what Kashmiris want, she said: "Average Kashmiris see India as an occupational force."
The young lady also countered BJP's claim that Article 370 stalled Kashmir's development. "Kashmir was placed well in Socio-Economic parameter? Why are UP and Bihar doing so bad despite being ruled by BJP," she said.
She also said that last 45 days have widened the gap between Kashmiris and rest of India and to win the Kashmiris back, the government needed to roll back the decision on Article 370.
She claimed that the BJP's abrogation of Article 370 sounded like a colonial project of the saffron party. "Is Jammu and Kashmir a colony of India? They have institutionalised suppression by brute force. Kashmir has become a breeding ground of rumours. There is no sense of normalcy in Kashmir," she said.
Iltija also claimed that Kashmiris feared that their culture and identity would now be subsumed by BJP's plan for demographic engineering. "It's a fight for their land, their culture and their identity. BJP wants to engineer demographic change in the only Muslim majority state in India," she said.
She lamented that India was gradually "hurtling towards and authoritarian state. "Is it Mahatma Gandhi's India or Nathuram Godse's India," she asked.
Pointing towards special provisions in the north eastern states and some other states passing laws to reserve jobs for local people, she said that the government had problem only with Kashmir seeking special provisions. "If others do reservation for jobs, it's fine. But if Kashmir does, everyone becomes terrorist and stone-palters. She even claimed that most of those who were gravitating towards terrorism were PhD students and engineers. "Burhan Wani had a reason for becoming a militant," she said.
Taking a dig at media hype over the Chandrayaan mission, Iltija said: ""You all were upset when Chandrayaan failed but nobody is upset that 9 million Kashmiris have been incarcerated."
"The BJP should have followed the policy of Vajpayee who is the only Indian leader loved and respected in Kashmir. Instead, the BJP is following the missteps of Congress," she said.
Making an appeal for an inclusive Kashmir, Iltija said that Kashmir suffered because of the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits. "Kashmir is a much richer place with Pandits. We want them to come back. We suffered because when they left."
She also ridiculed Prime Minister Modi's birthday celebration when he met his mother. "Modi Sahab can meet his mother; I have to seek Supreme Court's permission to meet my mother. Modi released butterflies on his birthday. He should free Kashmiris too."
Referring to the incarceration of several Left-oriented intellectual such as Sudha Bharadwaj, Iltija said that Modi government jailed those who fought for rights. "I'm proud that my mother is in jail. Today, those who fight for rights are in jail and those who violate are outside," she said taking a dig at rape-accused BJP leader Swami Chinmayanand.
