New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit scheduled to be held on June 13-14 in Kyrgyzstan's Bishkek. This will be PM Modi's first meeting with Xi Jinping after the BJP's massive victory in the general elections.
Both the leaders met last year in December on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Argentina and had discussed joint efforts to further enhance mutual trust and friendship between the two giant neighbours.
On PM Modi's re-election, Xi had extended "heartfelt congratulations" well before the results of the general elections were officially announced.
Before that, both the leaders had met in April during the informal Wuhan summit. The meeting took place in the backdrop of the 73-day Doklam standoff and was dubbed as a turning point in bilateral relations between the two countries.
According to reports, the bilateral trade between the two countries this is year is set to the cross US $100 billion. Last year, it was pegged at over US $95 billion.
India-China relations are set to remain high on New Delhi's agenda. The changing regional power dynamics remain one of the constant sources of anxiety and casts a shadow on bilateral relations between the two countries. PM Modi's recent first overseas visit to the Maldives underlines New Delhi's multi-pronged approach towards China and other regional countries.
India seems to be countering the growing Chinese influence by increasing its trade and presence with neighbours while on the other hand, maintaining strong diplomatic ties with Beijing.
However, the border dispute between the two countries remain intractable and Bejing's multi-billion-dollar investments in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) remains the single biggest thorn towards stabilising relations between the two countries.
