Indian Sailors Abducted In Nigeria, Sushma Swaraj Asks For Action At Highest Level
Sushma Swaraj has sought the release of Indian sailors kidnapped in Nigeria. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has asked the Indian High Commissioner in Nigeria to look into the matter of five Indian sailors who have been abducted in Nigeria
According to reports, it has been over two weeks that the five Indians were abducted by pirates in Nigeria. Family members of the sailors have said that they have been unable to contact them for several days.
On Tuesday, Sushma Swaraj took to Twitter to ask Indian diplomats in Nigeria to take up the matter with the government.
"I have seen news reports about abduction of five Indian sailors by pirates in Nigeria. I am asking Indian High Commissioner to take this up at the highest level with Government of Nigeria for their release," wrote Sushma Swaraj.
Sushma Swaraj has asked Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Abhay Thakur to prepare a report and send her.
Earlier, Bhagyashree Das, wife of one of the abducted sailors, Sudeep Kumar Choudhury, appealed to Sushma Swaraj on Twitter saying her husband has been kidnapped from the MT APECUS (IMO 733810) vessel.
The Indian mission in Nigeria wrote back to her saying the officials are in touch with Nigerian Navy and police for the past 10 days. The High Commission also said that the "concerned parties" [the abductor] have made initial contact.
On May 1, Bhagyashree replied saying it has been 12 days already and with no updates.
Now on May 7, Sushma Swaraj has said the government is taking up the matter with the highest level officials of the Nigerian government.
