Masood Azhar won’t be able to travel, sell or purchase arms and ammunition! Imran Khan-led government in Pakistan has issued an order to freeze Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar’s assets. Apart from this, a ban has been imposed on the travel of the dreaded terrorist. There is also a strict restriction on selling, purchasing arms and ammunition. The big development comes after Azhar was designated as a global terrorist at the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday.
These two developments can be seen as a major diplomatic win for Prime Minister Narendra Modi-headed central government whose relentless tactical pressure even forced China to give its go ahead on the listing issue of Masood Azhar at the UN.
The foreign ministry of Pakistan has issued a notification stating the Imran Khan government would abide by the Resolution 2368 (2017) and implement it on the ground level by taking necessary measures against Azhar. Islamabad has strictly directed its officials to ensure that the sanctions are implemented properly.
Azhar is the mastermind behind ghastly attacks on security forces in Pulwama and Pathankot. New Delhi asserted that Azhar was residing in Pakistan and even submitted a dossier after the February 14 Pulwama Attack. However, Islamabad did not take any concrete, stringent action against JeM and its chief. On February 26, Indian Air Force conducted daredevil preemptive non-military air strike on JeM terror training facility at Balakot in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province after crossing Line of Control as well as the International Border.
United Nations on February 21 condemned the Pulwama attack in Kashmir valley and even mentioned Jaish’s name. JeM has already been listed at UN and now Azhar has faced the global sanctions for his ties with Al-Qaeda. The US, UK and France played pivotal roles in enlisting Azhar at UN. Earlier the UN also banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Saeed who was the main perpetrator behind the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
