Indian Navy Showcases Its Prowess At Operations Demo
Governor P Sathasivam was the chief guest at the Naval Operations Demo in the city on Sunday. The event, which showcased Indian navy’s capabilities, was witnessed by hundreds of people from different walks of life in the city. The naval demonstration included rescue operations, interception of enemy vessels, a warship demo, flypast by aircraft, jet ski and water ski, and cargo lift. One of the highlights was a continuity drill and performance by the naval band.
The program ended with Beating Retreat and illumination of ships.
On display were INS Tir, a naval cadets training vessel, which was built indigenously by the Mazagon dock and was commissioned in 1986; INS Shardul, a landing ship built indigenously, which has now been converted into a training ship.
The capabilities of the marine commandos (MARCOS) were on live demonstration at the expo. Dornier aircraft, described as the workhorses of Indian Navy, SeaKing helicopters, Advanced Light Helicopters and Chetak light helicopters were also on show.
