First deliveries of a total of 3,192 units of the TATA Safari Storme have commenced to the Indian Armed Forces. Offered through a tender process wherein TATA Motor’s Safari Storme beat Mahindra’s Scorpio, the Safari Storme GS800 is being presented for use by the Indian Army in a 5 door body style with a hard top body.

Showcased at Def Expo 2018 in Chennai, TATA Safari Storme is built specially for the Indian Army and complies with their demands in style and stance. Recently, it was spied by Rahul in Lucknow, who shared the images on our group – Rushlane Spylane.


It comes in with an updated drive-train and modified suspension and initial deliveries have begun. The army spec Safari Storme is under the new GS800 – General Service 800 vehicle classification, offering hard top, air conditioning and a minimum payload capacity of 800 kg.

Army spec TATA Safari Storme is painted a matte green paint and gets no sign of chrome accents anywhere on its exterior makeup. Even chrome bits are painted green or have been blacked out to avoid any type of reflection.


Blacked out lamps, two heavy duty hooks on the back and a Jerry can holder on left rear fender is a part of its design. The Safari Storme sits on alloy wheels also painted matte green and gets auxiliary lights and a bonnet mounted antenna. Interiors are similar to the regular Safari Storme and done up in a beige colour scheme. It does, however, get flexible map lights at the front and rear.

The army spec TATA Safari Storme is powered by an upgraded Drive-Train. This 2.2 liter diesel engine offers 154 hp power and 400 Nm torque and gets mated to a 6 speed manual gearbox with torque on demand transfer. With these initial deliveries, TATA Safari Storme will slowly replace the ageing Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, Hindustan Ambassador and Mahindra MM550 DXB currently in use in the Indian Army.

Indian Army also purchased the new Safari 4x4 recently.
