PM Narendra Modi, Shinzo Abe Take Stock of Geopolitics Over Phone
It is understood that the two leaders also discussed Wuhan Summit, India as well as Japan's engagements with China including the recent Sino-Japan PM level meeting
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe have deliberated upon changing geopolitics including ties of respective country with China, the Wuhan Summit, Sino-Japan meeting, Korean peninsula situation and visits by both leaders to Russia.
During a nearly 30-minute conversation over telephone on Wednesday, Modi and Abe, who share personal chemistry, deliberated upon current trends in geo-politics including in the Indo-Pacific region as the two countries seek navigate the developments, persons familiar with the developments told ET.
It is understood that the two leaders also discussed Wuhan Summit, India as well as Japan's engagements with China including the recent Sino-Japan PM level meeting, role of China in region and efforts for free & open Indo-Pacific region. The phone call also happened ahead of this year's Malabar Naval exercise at Guam in June.
PM Modi’s upcoming visit to Sochi for informal summit with the Russian President Vladimir Putin which will be followed by Japanese PM’s visit to St Petersburg to meet Putin were also part of the conversation.
The Korean Peninsula situation ahead of the proposed Trump-Kim summit is also understood to be on agenda of talks as India sent its minister to Pyongyang this week to engage with the leadership. The two countries will h old their annual summit later this year when Modi travels to Japan.
