GMR To Set Up Defence Hub In Tamil Nadu
The proposed hub benefits from the already established industrial ecosystem in Hosur for over 700 MSMEs
Infrastructure conglomerate GMR group announced setting up of an aerospace and defence manufacturing hub at its special investment region located at Hosur in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu."
The project is a joint venture between GMR group and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation. Around 600 acres of prime industrial land has been made available for the project.
In a statement on Wednesday, GMR group said the proposed project is ideally located for defence related manufacturing as many major defence public sector undertakings such as Hindustan Aeronautics, Bharat Electronics, Bharat Earth Movers, and Defence Research and Development Organisation are within a distance of about 60 kilometres.
The proposed hub also benefits from the already established industrial ecosystem in Hosur where more than 700 micro, small and medium enterprises are engaged in precision engineering, it said.
“This defence manufacturing hub can potentially be a game changer for the region,” said BVN Rao, business chairman of transportation and urban infrastructure, GMR group. “We will be providing all the necessary infrastructure facilities to attract global majors to set up their manufacturing facilities here.”
Although India is the fifth largest spender on defence globally, nearly 60% of its requirements are met through imports owing to an underdeveloped defence manufacturing sector.
This has prompted the government to take up indigenisation of defence production on priority.
