Why Does India Not Enjoy Veto Rights In UN? Asks Iranian President
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani today questioned why does India not enjoy 'veto' rights
"Why India, with a population of over 1 billion, doesn't enjoy veto rights and why does the US have veto rights?" Rouhani noted.
The United Nations Security Council "veto power" gives the 'permanent members' the authority to veto any "substantive" resolution.
So far only five countries -- the US, China, France, the UK and Russia -- enjoy the right to veto.
He also shared that five countries who "had atomic bombs" were given the right of veto.
Rouhani is on a three-day visit to India. The Iranian President also interacted with President Ram Nath Kovind in New Delhi earlier today.
President Rouhani received a ceremonial reception at the Rashtrapati Bhavan after he reached the Capital from Hyderabad.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Hassan Rouhan held bilateral talks today during which trade, investment, energy, defence, security among other issues were discussed. The two sides also inked nine pacts, including one on double taxation avoidance.
