India Sends A Deadly Deterrent To Bully China's Backyard, Delivers BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missiles To Philippines

Manila: India delivered the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines on Friday, as part of the USD 375 million deal between the two sides signed in 2022.

The Indian Air Force sent its American origin C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft with the missiles to the Philippines to deliver the weapon system to the Philippines' Marine Corps, according to the defence sources.

The export of ground systems for the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system along with the missiles started last month itself, they said.

The Philippines is taking delivery of the missile systems at a time when tensions between them and China have escalated owing to frequent clashes in the South China Sea. The three batteries of the BrahMos missile system would be deployed by the Philippines in their coastal areas to guard against any threat in the region.

The deal has been cleared with multiple approvals from partner nations in the program.

The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, is said to be one of the most successful missile programs in the world. Acknowledged as the foremost and swiftest precision-guided weapon on a global scale, BRAHMOS has played a pivotal role in enhancing India's deterrence capabilities.

The Indian Army has integrated multiple BrahMos regiments into its arsenal since 2007.

CDS Asks Military, DRDO To Work With Start-Ups To Get Cutting-Edge Space Tech To Reduce Gap With Adversaries

In an effort to boost collaboration between the Indian space and defence sectors, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan today asked the three defence forces and DRDO to engage with the Space industry and start-ups to develop cutting-edge technology to reduce the gap with the adversaries.

In his virtual address, General Chauhan said, "I will call upon DRDO to deeply engage with the Indian startup community in partnership with the Indian space industry to develop cutting-edge solutions that would help reduce our technology gap vis-a-vis our adversaries."

General Chauhan said that there is a need to develop and update our requisite doctrines to ensure that space and cyber elements are deeply integrated at strategic, operational and tactical levels. Dwelling on the scope of business for the space industry, he said, "I can say that there is enough space for everyone to grow."

"I wish all the start-ups in the space domain would graduate to become unicorns and then flourish as global partners in the times to come," he added.

The Chief of Defence Staff was speaking at the Indian Defence Space Symposium 2024, where the inaugural event included Chief Guest Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, Indian Navy, Guest of Honour Samir V Kamat, Chairman, DRDO and various other dignitaries from across the ministries, defence and space industries.

The first day of the event witnessed various sessions and panel discussions with experts from the defence, space sector to deliberate on a wide range of topics like challenges in the sectors, China's defence space capability, etc.

Addressing the inaugural session, Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral R. Hari Kumar, said, "It is in our aspiration to be AtmaNirbhar and I see the biggest congruence of and convergence in action between space and the sea. The Bhartiya Nausena has resolved to be a fully Atmanirbhar force by 2047 and we actively seek the support of our partners in the space industry in our relentless pursuit of the same. In the vast expanses of the maritime domain, satellite connectivity provides us with reliable and secure communication, even in the most remote expanses of our areas of operation. High-bandwidth SATCOM links facilitate real-time voice, data and video transmission, ensuring seamless command, control, communication and coordination across diverse theatres of operation as we strive to ensure safe, secure and stable seas for all."

"Space technology has indeed emerged as the key enabler for bolstering maritime security through real-time and responsive maritime domain awareness, offering invaluable insight into movement, vessel tracking, illegal fishing detection, disaster management and environmental protection. Looking ahead, synergy with several space agencies and industries and initiatives like IDEX promised further advancements that encourage innovation and self-reliance by pooling resources across academia, industry and startups," General Chauhan said.

"I would encourage the space sector, MSMEs and start-ups to borrow a leaf from our successful initiatives in indigenization. And similar to the innovations in the space sector through IDEX, Bhartiya Nausena, with the aim of forwarding the technology curve, has been working alongside MSMEs, start-ups, academia, students, innovators and dreamers through our three-tier organisation, the Naval Innovation and Indigenization Organisation (NIIO). By fostering collaboration and embracing emerging technologies, together we can unlock new frontiers of exploration while ensuring the safety, security and prosperity of our great nation," he added.

Samir V Kamat, Chairman, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), speaking at the inaugural day, said, "Space situational awareness, space-based surveillance, and launch on demand capability are some areas where we need to develop capabilities further, these are critical areas. And we can do this if we all work together. It is indeed a very good sign, that all of us are taking space and defence collaboration seriously. This is one area that is now going to be a key focus area. We are willing to work with startups and industry and we are also willing to fund R&D in this area. IDEX already has 75 challenges, but we also have another mechanism called the Technology Development Fund, where we can fund up to 50 crore. If there are any good projects where any start-ups or MSMEs are present today and if you have any good proposals, you can approach us."

Lieutenant General AK Bhatt, DG of the Indian Space Association, emphasised in his vote of thanks the need to focus on discussions around DefSpace challenges to take it forward and to get an outcome for the users, i.e., the services. He also informed the audience about the recent launch of the Earth observation satellite by TASL, a one-to-one model of which was also available in the exhibition. The DG also informed the audience of Euroconsult's study on the social impact of space initiated by ISRO.

The ongoing symposium is focusing on creating a platform for all stakeholders who have a keen interest in boosting India's military space capability and plans. The platform brings together experts from multiple domains to discuss the latest trends and challenges in the field of defence space, making it an excellent networking opportunity for attendees from the defence, DRDO, and government sectors, as well as industry professionals, to collaborate.

Vienna: Iran's nuclear sites are unharmed, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Friday after Israel allegedly launched retaliatory strikes overnight.

In a statement released today, the United Nations Atomic Watchdog said it is monitoring the situation very closely. It further said that IAEA Director General, Rafael Mariano Grossi has emphasised the ongoing need for utmost restraint from all parties, adding that nuclear facilities should never be a target in military conflicts.

"IAEA can confirm that there is no damage to #Iran's nuclear sites. DG @rafaelmgrossi continues to call for extreme restraint from everybody and reiterates that nuclear facilities should never be a target in military conflicts. IAEA is monitoring the situation very closely."

An US official confirmed to ABC News outlet that Israel carried out airstrikes against Israel. Al Jazeera cited Mehr news agency reporting that "sounds were heard over the city" in Isfahan early today adding that "several miniature UAVs were shot down."

However, the official could not confirm whether Syria and Iraq sites were hit as well. The report came shortly after local sources reported blasts in Isfahan region in central Iran.

Following this, Iran fired air defence batteries and shut down flight operations in several cites including Tehran,Shiraz and Isfahan that was later lifted.

The latest development comes after Iran on April 13 fired a barrage of over 300 missiles and drones against Israel, which Tehran said was in retaliation for a presumed Israeli strike on its consulate in Syria on April 1 in which 13 people were killed.

Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian during discussions on the Middle East situation at the UNSC on Thursday warned Israel against taking any military actions targeting Iranian interests.

He stated Iran has concluded its "defence and counteroffensive measures" and urged the international community to stop Israel from carrying out any military operations against Iran.

U.S. Congresswomen Raise Concern Over Uyghur Genocide In Xinjiang

New York: A US Congresswoman representing California's 40th district, Young Kim raised the issues and atrocities faced by the Uyghurs in East Turkistan in a virtual conference on Thursday.

The US lawmaker was giving a virtual statement during a two-day press conference organised in New York by Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity, the World Uyghur Congress and Uyghur Human Rights Project.

In her statement, she highlighted that the Uyghurs face genocide in modern-day concentration camps in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

"In the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, Uyghurs face genocide in modern-day concentration camps, and they are silenced, detained, imprisoned, tortured, and brainwashed by the Chinese government each day. So we cannot turn a blind eye to the plight of Uyghurs and to a regime that actively silences, enslaves, and tortures its own people," she said.

She further expressed gratitude for the passing of the Uyghur Policy Act.

"I'm proud that earlier this year, the House of Representatives passed my Uyghur Policy Act," she added.

"The Uyghur Policy Act equips the United States with tools needed to support the basic human rights and distinct identities of Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities subject to the Chinese government's inhumane treatment," she added.

She further shared her experience and said that, as a Korean-American who grew up in South Korea during the aftermath of the Korean War, supporting global human rights and holding authoritarian regimes accountable is deeply personal to her.

"This has become a top priority of my work as I serve as chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Indo-Pacific," Kim added.

She further said, "There is much more work to be done, and I will continue to push back against the Chinese government's disinformation, coercion, and abuse, and support human rights and freedom around the world."

Earlier, another US lawmaker, Ami Bera, who had helped Kim in the formation of the Uyghur Policy Act, said, "This bill takes crucial steps to bolster American efforts to safeguard the distinct ethnic, religious, cultural, and linguistic identity of the Uyghur people and promote respect for human rights and religious freedom in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The United States Congress must remain vigilant in our efforts to uphold human rights at home and abroad."

Moreover, another prominent human rights activist and the Executive Director of the Uyghur Human Rights Project, Omer Kanat, said that this would give huge hope to Uyghurs, and asked the Senate to act without delay.

Iran Asserts 'Right To Self Defence' Over Israel's 'Aggression'; Slams UN For Failing Its Duty

New Delhi: Iran has exercised its "inherent right of self-defence" in response to what it termed the "Zionist regime's heinous military aggression" against its diplomatic premises in Damascus in Syria, according to a statement issued by the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in India on Friday.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran, as a responsible member of the United Nations, emphasizing its commitment to the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and the rule of law, in response to the Zionist regime's heinous military aggression and unlawful use of force against diplomatic premises of Iran in Damascus, the Syrian Arab Republic on 1st April 2024, implemented its inherent right of SELF DEFENSE in accordance with the Article 51 of the UN Charter on 14 April 2024," the press statement read.

It said that Israel had "in a grave violation of UN Charter and basic norms of international law, committed a terrorist attack" against its protected premises in Syria, but Iran exercised its "inherent right of self defence" in "full compliance with the relevant rules and regulations, and only targeted military objectives and army bases, without harm, injury or suffering for the civilians."

The statement noted that Israel's "aggression" against the Iranian embassy seriously violated Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations 1961, and the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes Against Internationally Protected Persons Including Diplomatic Agents 1973, and the United Nation Charter as well.

It expressed disappointment that the UN Security Council failed to "fulfil its duty in a right, fair, unbiased and undiscriminating manner".

"Consequently, there was no other choice rather than resorting to the inherent right of SELF DEFENSE as articulated in Article 51 of the UN Charter, aimed at defending our nation, national security and sovereignty," the statement issued by the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in India said.

The statement further said, "it is worth reiterating that in contradiction to the occupying regime's aggressive and genocidal pattern which tends to escalate and exacerbate tensions in the region aiming to threaten the international peace and security by expanding the scope of the war far beyond the occupied Palestinian territories, the Islamic Republic of Iran is committed to the UN Charter and will not hesitate to continue its constructive role for the stabilizing peace and stability in the region."

Meanwhile, earlier Friday Israel struck Iran, an US official told ABC News while New York Times said three Iranian sources confirmed that a military air base in Iran's central province of Isfahan had been hit.

Isfahan houses sites associated with Iran's nuclear program, including its underground Natanz nuclear enrichment site.

There has been no official confirmation by Israeli authorities on the reported reprisal strike for an Iranian attack on Israel days earlier.

Al Jazeera cited Mehr news agency reporting that "sounds were heard over the city" in Isfahan early today adding that "several miniature UAVs were shot down." It said that Iran had lifted restrictions across its country after authorities temporarily suspended flights over several cities including Tehran, Shiraz and Isfahan.

Hossein Dalirian, a spokesman for Iran's space agency said on the X social media platform that several small "quadcopter" drones had been shot down. Al Jazeera cited his X post as saying that, "There are no reports of a missile attack for now."

The latest development comes after Iran on April 13 launched missiles and drones agaisnt Israel, which Tehran said was in retaliation for a presumed Israeli strike on its consulate in Syria on April 1 in which 13 people were killed.

Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian during discussions on the Middle East situation at the UNSC on Thursday warned Israel against taking any military actions targeting Iranian interests.

Netanyahu made the statement at the cabinet meeting on Wednesday after meeting with the foreign ministers of the UK and Germany. UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock arrived in Israel on Wednesday.

How Close Is Iran To Having Nuclear Weapons?

Iran's nuclear program advancements prompt international concern. The 2015 deal collapse led to uranium enrichment violations, raising doubts about Iran's nuclear intentions and capabilities. Uncertainties persist regarding weaponization timelines and monitoring challenges.

Iran denies ever having a nuclear weapons program, though Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has said that if it wanted to world leaders "wouldn't be able to stop us".

As its 2015 nuclear deal with major powers has eroded over the years, Iran has expanded and accelerated its nuclear program, reducing the time it would need to build a nuclear bomb if it chose to, though it denies wanting to.

A senior Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander said on Thursday that Iran could review its "nuclear doctrine" amid Israeli threats. While it was unclear exactly what he meant, and that term tends to refer to countries that, unlike Iran, have nuclear weapons, below is an outline of where Iran stands.

The 2015 deal introduced strict limits on Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions against Tehran. It slashed Iran's stock of enriched uranium, leaving it only with a small amount enriched to up to 3.67% purity, far from the roughly 90% purity that is weapons grade.

The United States said at the time that a main aim was to increase the time Iran would need to produce enough fissile material for a nuclear bomb - the biggest single hurdle in a weapons program - to at least a year.

In 2018 then-President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the deal, reimposing sanctions on Tehran that slashed its oil sales and battered its economy. In 2019, Iran started breaching the restrictions on its nuclear activities and then pushed far beyond them.

It has now breached all the deal's key restrictions, including on where, with what machines and to what level it can enrich uranium, as well as how much material it can stockpile.

Its stock of enriched uranium, which was capped at 202.8 kg under the deal, stood at 5.5 tonnes in February, according to the latest quarterly report by the U.N. nuclear watchdog that inspects Iran's enrichment plants.

Iran is now enriching uranium to up to 60% purity and has enough material enriched to that level, if enriched further, for two nuclear weapons, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency's theoretical definition.

That means Iran's so-called "breakout time" - the time it would need to produce enough weapons-grade uranium for a nuclear bomb - is close to zero, likely a matter of weeks or days.

The IAEA inspects Iran's declared enrichment sites: an above-ground plant and a larger, underground one at its Natanz complex and another buried inside a mountain at Fordow.

As a result of Iran ceasing to implement elements of the deal, the IAEA can no longer fully monitor Iran's production and inventory of centrifuges, machines that enrich uranium, and it can no longer conduct snap inspections. That has prompted speculation about whether Iran could have set up a secret enrichment site, but there are no concrete indications of one.

Weaponization

Aside from uranium enrichment, there is the question of how long it would take Iran to produce the rest of a nuclear weapon and potentially make it small enough to put in a delivery system like a ballistic missile, should it choose to. This is much harder to estimate as it is less clear how much knowledge Iran has.

U.S. intelligence agencies and the IAEA believe Iran had a coordinated nuclear weapons program that it halted in 2003. It worked on aspects of weaponization and some work continued until as late as 2009, the IAEA found in a 2015 report.

Iran denies ever having a nuclear weapons program, though Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has said that if it wanted to world leaders "wouldn't be able to stop us".

Estimates of how long Iran would need for weaponization generally vary between months and about a year.

In March 2023 the top U.S. military officer at the time, General Mark Milley, testified to Congress that weaponization would take Iran several months, though he did not say what that assessment was based on.

In a quarterly report in February this year, the IAEA said: "Public statements made in Iran regarding its technical capabilities to produce nuclear weapons only increase the Director General's concerns about the correctness and completeness of Iran's safeguards declarations."

Diplomats said those statements included a television interview by Iran's former nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi in which he likened producing a nuclear weapon to building a car, and said Iran knew how to make the parts needed.

2,500 People Cross India-Bangladesh Border Fencing To Cast Votes In Tripura

A substantial number of voters in Tripura for historical reasons, had to stay beyond the barbed wire fencing

Around 2,500 voters crossed fencing on the India-Bangladesh border to cast their votes in Tripura on April 19.

The barbed wire fencing might have cast a shadow on their lives but none of them want to miss the opportunity to exercise their franchise in the biggest festival of democracy. A substantial number of voters in Tripura for historical reasons, had to stay beyond the barbed wire fencing.

Those who have attained the legal age for voting are now enrolled in the electoral rolls of Tripura. Since morning, the border gates have been opened to facilitate the voting.

Amid heightened security given the polls, Indian citizens, who are sort of cut off from the mainstream, expressed that they have been receiving all kinds of cooperation from the authorities so that they can cast their votes without any hassle.

Speaking to ANI, an Indian citizen Hafizur Rahmanz who lives in the Bangladesh side of the barbed wire fencing said all the 50 voters who live in his village are eager to cast their votes in these elections.

"My name is Hafizur Rahman. I live on the other side of the fence. The situation is quite good. The voting is also proceeding smoothly. There are 19 families consisting of 50 voters. Most of them have cast their votes in the morning and the remaining voters will soon come to cast their votes," said Rahman.

The voting also coincided with "Jumma.". "Due to Jumma, some people were busy with religious activities. All of them will certainly come to cast votes," Rahman told ANI, adding that the border gates stay open when the polling is underway.

The border guarding forces deployed at the border gates verify the photo identification cards of the villagers who have to cross the fence every day. On the voting day as well, there was no exception. In the Jayanagar area, located very close to Agartala city, female BSF personnel have been discharging their duties.

Ful Banu Begam, another resident of the same village that falls under the Ramnagar assembly constituency, said, "The families living in our village have been participating in the election process since morning. We have faced no problems so far. Several people have already voted; others are getting ready to cast their votes. Everything is going on peacefully. We live ahead of the fence. This 80C gate behind me helps us cross the borders."

According to the Returning Officer West Tripura Parliamentary seat, the total number of voters living ahead of the fence stands at 2,500. All the ahead-of-fence villages fall under the jurisdiction of the West Tripura Parliamentary Constituency.

"The voting turnout is satisfactory and if the trends keep rising at the same pace, the total voting turnout will certainly cross the 80 per cent mark," said RO West Tripura Dr Vishal Kumar.

He said that around 34 per cent of the voters casted their vote adding that administration and police made rounds to keep a strict vigil on the safety and security of the voters.

On the security measures in bordering areas given the history of violence in the area, he said, "Since Ramnagar is a border-aligned area and it has a history of poll violence, we have made adequate arrangements for security personnel. Teams of administration and police have been making rounds to keep a strict vigil. According to reports received from the polling stations, the voting process is underway smoothly and no untoward incident has occurred so far."

On the population living ahead of fencing areas, Dr Kumar said, "If you consider the whole Parliamentary Constituency, more than 2,500 voters are residing between the zero line and fencing and most of them are living in Boxanagar. The population there is around 1,600 and all will vote here. We have seen that a large number of voters participated in the polls last year. More than 90 per cent of them cast their votes. We hope the same scenario will be there this year also."

Israel Notified U.S. Before Iran Attack: Sources

According to Reuters report, Iranian state TV said that shortly after midnight "three drones were observed in the sky over Isfahan. The air defence system became active and destroyed these drones in the sky."

Israel reportedly attacked Iran on late Thursday, reported Reuters on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. This incident follows days after Iran initiated a retaliatory drone strike on Israel.

However, one of the sources told Reuters the U.S. was not involved but was notified by Israel before the attack.

Senior Iranian official told Reuters after reported strike that there is no plan for immediate retaliation. The official also said that no clarification on who is behind incident.

Iran's Fars news agency reported three explosions were heard near an army base in the central city of Isfahan. An Iranian official told Reuters there was no missile attack and the explosions were the result of the activation of Iran's air defence systems.

According to Reuters, Iran's senior commander Mihandoust said, "noise heard in Isfahan overnight was caused by air defence targeting one suspicious object."

The broadcaster later said the situation in Isfahan was normal and no ground explosions had occurred. Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) claimed that Iran's nuclear sites have remained damage free, as per Reuters.

An Iran analyst told state TV that the it was attacked by infiltrators within country via mini drones, reported Reuters.

Several Iranian nuclear sites are located in Isfahan province, including Natanz, centrepiece of Iran's uranium enrichment program.

Iran Fires Air Defence Batteries

Iran fired air defence batteries early Friday morning after reports of explosions near a major airbase at the city of Isfahan, reported AP, citing the state-run IRNA news agency.

It remained unclear if the country was under attack. However, tensions remain high after Iran’s unprecedented missile-and-drone attack on Israel. One government official suggested sites may have been targeted by drones.

IRNA said the defences fired across several provinces. It did not elaborate on what caused the batteries to fire, though people across the area reported hearing the sounds.

In particular, IRNA said air defences fired at a major airbase in Isfahan, which long has been home to Iran's fleet of American-made F-14 Tomcats — purchased before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, reported AP.

India To Deliver First Set of BrahMos Missiles To Philippines Today

New Delhi: India is set to deliver the first set of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines as part of the USD 375 million deal between the two sides signed in 2022.

The Indian Air Force is sending its American origin C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft with the missiles to Philippines to deliver the weapon system to the Philippines Marine Corps, defence sources said.

The transportation of systems has also taken place through the sea route where cargo vessels were hired, the sources said.

The export of ground systems for the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system along with the missiles started last month itself, they said.

The Philippines is taking delivery of the missile systems at a time when tensions between them and China have been going up due to the frequent clashes in the South China Sea.

The three batteries of the BrahMos missile system would be deployed by the Philippines in their coastal areas to guard against any threat in the region.

The deal has been cleared with multiple approvals from partner nations in the programme.

The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, a joint venture between DRDRO and Russia's Russian Federation's NPO Mashinostroyeniya, is said to be one of the most successful missile programs in the world. Acknowledged as the foremost and swiftest precision-guided weapon on a global scale, BRAHMOS has played a pivotal role in enhancing India's deterrence capabilities.

The Indian Army has integrated multiple BrahMos regiments into its arsenal since 2007.

Kaynes Tech To Produce 3,000 RUDRA Servers For C-DAC

Kaynes Technology, a leading electronics manufacturer, will produce 3,000 natively planned high-performance computing (HPC) servers for the government-claimed Place for Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).

“These servers are planned to be used for building PARAM RUDRA supercomputing systems under National Supercomputing Mission (NSM),” said E Magesh, director general of C-DAC. He said C-DAC is banking on Kaynes Technology to deliver the indigenous servers.

RUDRA HPC servers under the NSM will be made to meet the computational necessities of areas such as hyper-scale data centers, edge processing, banking, money, medical care and high-level assembly.

Kaynes Technology's managing director, Ramesh Kannan, said this agreement is for assembling RUDRA-1 HPC servers. RUDRA-2 is ready to go, as the organization has obtained the model request from C-DAC.

“Kaynes got the licence to manufacture this technology in India within three-and-a-half months of receiving the design file,” he said. “We could procure all the components, get the printed circuit board, and get the design studies, and verification done in-house. We could complete ten prototypes of this server in this period that were fully functional.

“We started operations in electronics manufacturing last October in a factory spread over 17 acres in Chamarajanagar near Mysuru. In this, we have set up five lines for surface-mount technology (SMT), one of which can produce one lakh servers per year,” Kannan said. “In the next 20 weeks, we will start manufacturing 3,000 servers. The integrated circuits must come from outside. After this, we will deliver the prototype for RUDRA-2.”
